Middle School Case Study: An Ongoing Study: Severe At-Risk -- No Child is LostA middle school with a number of at-risk children decided to do a pilot program to see what Living Consciously might do for these youth. It was determined that the school counselor would create a special "call-out" group of sixth graders asking the different individuals to participate on a volunteer basis. This group was comprised of youth who were severely at-risk, with high disciplinary records, severe oppositional behavior, failing grades. In short, these were potential expulsion candidates. Sadly, some were already substance abusers.
During the first year of Living Consciously, there was a dramatic change in the group, with shifts in classroom behavior, social behavior and big changes in constructive decision making. All of the children in this group stopped substance abuse. The group wanted to continue with the program for a second year.
During the second year, the program was expanded and 18 educators were trained in Living Consciously. Students from the initial group spoke to teachers and administrators who were moved to tears by the change in these youth: their new-found maturity, their peaceful and balanced natures, their honesty about the mistakes they had made and how these were corrected, their new-found respect for others - and themselves. In short, those most at-risk in the school were becoming role models for the best at that school.
Movement between the students 6th and 7th grade survey tracking results showed an 85.7% reduction in disciplinary incidence and an 85% improvement in grades. Now in 8th grade, this group will be continuing Living Consciously for a third year (2003-2004).
As if this case study is not already an amazing example of how Living Consciously can turn a life around, consider the other effects of the program. Based on their review of the Living Consciously curriculum, parents demanded Living Consciously classes for themselves. Overflow seminars were given and training of educators and parents in that community continues. Living Consciously parent groups are expanding and the possibility of parent-child groups are being considered.
No child is lost. Every Life is Precious. Schools, families and homes are being restored.
